Richard J. 'Dick' Hunter

Richard J. "Dick" Hunter, age 82, of Alpena, passed away peacefully on January 4, 2018, at Mid-Michigan Medical Center of Alpena.
Richard was born on April 5, 1935, to the late Raymond and Aurore (Fontaine) Hunter in Alpena, Michigan. On January 21, 1956, he married Joan Powell at St. Mary Catholic Church with Rev. Fr. Chester Pilarski officiating. Dick worked for the National Gypsum Company retiring after 31 years. Dick was a member of St. Bernard Catholic Church, and the Thunderbay Island Preservation. He was a past Commander of the Coast Guard Reserve, a Scout Leader for the Explorer Scouts, an avid scuba diver, and once owned a Florida air boat. Dick was an activist and an environmentalist. He brought the Vietnam War Memorial to the Alpena area in 1996 and he enjoyed spending his time at his camp "Retnuh," and with his coffee group at the local McDonald's.
Dick is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Joan and their two daughters Cindy (Mike) Russell of Presque Isle, MI; Patti (Tim) Beyers of Naples, FL; one son-in-law Scott MacKenzie of Alpena, MI; 10 grandchildren: Jason Kierst, Jamie (Micheal) Sobik, Eric (Megan), Brad (Kathy), and CJ (Kelsey) MacKenzie, Brianne (Simon) Brackett, Cole and Stevi Byers, Michelle (Matt) Lumetta, and Kristy (Kevin) Collins; 8 great-grandchildren: Max, Cooper, Porter, Marlowe, and Haddie MacKenzie, Hunter Sobik, Emily and Gavin Lumetta; along with one brother Joseph (Peggy) Hunter of Metairie, LA; a sister Evelyn Musser of Woodland Hills, CA; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his daughter Lori MacKenzie, three brothers James, Francis, and Alex P. Hunter, and a sister Mary Jo Clewley.
Family and friends will gather for visitation on Sunday, January 7, 2018, at Karpus-Hunter Funeral Home from 2 pm until 8 pm. Visitation will continue on Monday, January 8, 2018, at Karpus-Hunter Funeral Home form 10 am until the 12 noon Funeral Service begins with Rev. Fr. James Fitzpatrick officiating.
Internment: Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Black River, Michigan
