Paula M. Schimmel

            Paula M. Schimmel, age 78, of Alpena, passed away on Friday, December 7, 2018, surrounded by her children and sister.

            On October 12, 1940, Paula was born in Detroit, Michigan to the late Austin and Kathleen (Fitzgerald) Schimmel. She attended Mercy High School and Wayne State University. She joined the convent for a brief period of time and also worked at Ford.  For the past 24 years, Paula lived next to her sister on the same patch of land their parents purchased over 50 years ago, on Long Lake in Alpena, Michigan. Paula's house was full of laughter, fun, and love. Motherhood proved to be her vocation and life's joy. She baked cookies, disliked cleaning, fed everyone and had a ton of energy. She took her kids and their friends swimming and apple picking. She played tennis, swam a mile a day and jogged. Paula owned dogs all of her life and took in any dog or cat that was dropped off at her house, no questions asked. She was everyone's confidante and cheerleader. Her passing has caused so many hearts to break.    

            She was the most awesome mom to her four kids: Maribeth Borowski of Redondo, CA; Michael (Laura) Borowski of Grosse Pointe Woods, MI; Anne (Lee) Bird of Farmington Hills, MI; and Kathleen Borowski of Milan, MI. She is also survived by her five grandchildren: Luke, Sophia, Eva, Max and Leo; one sister: Joan Schimmel of Alpena, MI; two brothers Richard (Nancy) Schimmel of Canton, MI; and Michael (Susan) Schimmel of FL.

            Paula was preceded in death by her brother John Schimmel and one sister Kathleen Sikorski.

            Family and friends will gather for Memorial Visitation on Monday, December 17, 2018, at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church, located at 23815 Power Road; Farmington Hills, Michigan 48336; from 9:30 a.m. until the 10 a.m. Memorial Service begins. A luncheon following the service will be held at 24756 Crestview Court in Farmington. (Maps will be provided at the service.)

            In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Hospice of Michigan in Paula's memory.
