Mary Elizabeth Frey

Mary Elizabeth Frey, 73, of Alpena, passed away after a long courageous battle with cancer on Wednesday, February 22, 2023 surrounded by her family. She was a kind, caring, and loving wife, mother, grandmother, and friend who will be deeply missed. Mary was born on Nov. 7, 1949 to the late Harry and Florence (Gougeon) Janeske in Alpena. She was a graduate of Catholic Central High School. Shortly after high school, Mary worked for GTE in Alpena for several years and later for Alpena Public Schools assisting in the office.

She enjoyed many things in life such as cooking, gardening, sewing, and caring for others. However, nothing brought her greater joy than caring for and loving her family, especially her grandkids. She could often be found cooking or baking for her family or anyone else who happened to be around. She was a member of St Anne Catholic Church as well as The Daughters of Isabella. On September 9, 1972 she married the love of her life, Donald Frey at St. Anne Catholic Church.

Mary is survived by her husband of 50 years Donald, two daughters, Kali Smith of Alpena, and Kerri Richter of Petoskey, three grandchildren, Wyatt Smith, Samantha, and Claire Richter, brother-in-law James Frey, sister-in-law Cheryl McNeil, and a nephew Michael McNeil. She was preceded in death by her parents and an infant daughter, Mindi Ane Frey.

Family will receive friends for visitation on Friday, February 24, 2023 at St. Anne Catholic Church of All Saints Parish from 10:00 A.M. until the Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 A.M. with Fr. Michael Lingaur as Celebrant. Interment will take place at Holy Cross Cemetery.
