Louis C. Baker, age 97, lifelong resident of Herron, Michigan passed away peacefully at his home in Chelsea Retirement Community in Chelsea, Michigan on Monday, December 30, 2019.
On October 27, 1922, Louis was born to the late George and Lillian (Jobin) Baker in Alpena, Michigan. He married Jean Kaiser on May 15, 1943, in Herron, Michigan at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church with Fr. Bouchard officiating. They were blessed with two children and 76 years of marriage. Louis worked at the Ypsilanti Bomber Plant briefly before serving in the United States Navy during the end of WWII. Jean and Louis bought their farm in Herron in 1946, which was their home until July of 2017, when they moved to the Chelsea Retirement Community to be closer to their children. He worked for the Huron Portland Cement Company at the Paxton Shale Quarry until his retirement in 1984. Louis and Jean also raised crops and horses on their farm. He was a lifetime member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church and had a strong Christian faith. After his retirement he was very active in the Hospice program and Habitat for Humanity. He delivered Communion to shut-ins and worked with several nursing homes making Ukrainian Easter eggs during Lent. He learned to play the guitar and golf, built an observatory in his backyard and wrote two books about his life.
Louis is survived by his loving wife Jane "Jean" of Chelsea, MI; his son Wayne (Gloria) Baker of Manchester, MI; his daughter DeeAnn (Douglas) Bauer of Troy, MI; and exchange student daughter Dorothy (Karnik Shishmanian) Rouse of Vancouver, British Columbia; two granddaughters: Amy (Scott) Baker-Young of Webberville, MI and Noelle Baker (Jeff Showiak) of Dundee, MI; his two great-granddaughters: Celeste and Daphne Baker; two sisters: Donna (Phil) Timmreck and Carolyn (Gerald) Donakowski both of Alpena, MI; along with several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by eight brothers: Alfred, George "Gerald," Jay, Willis, Warner "Dutch," Fredrick, Joseph and Ronald; five sisters: Jeanette Baker, Mary Baker, Winifred Curtis, Marjorie Martell, and Betty Lou Wysocki.
Family and friends will gather for visitation on Friday, January 3, 2020, at Karpus-Hunter Funeral Home from 4 pm until 8 pm, with a Full Military Honors accorded by the V.F.W. Post 2496 beginning at 7 pm. Visitation will continue on Saturday, January 4, 2020, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church from 10 am until the 11 am Mass of Christian Burial begins with Fr. James Fitzpatrick officiating.
Interment: Holy Cross Cemetery
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church.
