Alpena, MI – Lawrence Arnold Bak, 77, of Alpena entered into eternal life on June 8, 2024.
A retired Michigan State Police Sergeant, Lawrence (also affectionately known as Uncle Laur) was the youngest of three children and born on March 31,1947 in Detroit, Michigan to the late Stanley and Helen (Pietrykowski) Bak. He graduated from St. Anthony High School in Detroit in 1965 and earned his bachelor’s degree in commerce and finance from the University of Detroit before joining the Michigan State Police in September 1969. He graduated from MSP Recruit School #76 and was assigned his first post in Flint, Michigan. From there, he served at the Erie and Alpena posts. He retired in February 2011 after numerous commendations and faithfully serving the Michigan State Police for 41 years.
A committed follower of the Catholic faith, Larry was a long-time member of All Saints Parish/St. Anne’s Catholic Church and a member of the Knights of Columbus where he had previously served as Grand Knight for the Alpena Council as well as District Deputy. He was also very active in Right to Life of Michigan and Crime Stoppers of Northeast Michigan.
Larry is survived by his brother, Bernard (and Diane) Bak; sister-in-law Theresa Bak; ex-wife Connie; his children, Anne Bak Marine, Michael Bak, and Robert Bak, as well as his grandchildren, Amelia and Alex Marine; and numerous nieces, nephews, and grandnieces and grandnephews. He has been preceded in death by his brother, Arthur Bak, and his son, Geoffrey Bak.
Visitation for family and friends will be held from 9-11am on Saturday, June 15th at St. Anne’s Catholic Church located at 817 Sable Street in Alpena. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 11am followed by interment at Holy Cross Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Larry’s honor may be directed to Crime Stoppers of Northeast Michigan, P.O. Box 137, Alpena, MI. 49707.
