Larry J. Marzean, a steadfast soul with roots firmly planted in the rich soil of Alpena, Michigan, left this world on August 20, 2024. He was born on August 2, 1946, and his journey through life became a tapestry woven with threads of hard work, love for family, and a passion for the great outdoors.
A devoted millwright, Larry dedicated over 25 years of his life to Abitibi where he earned respect and admiration until his retirement in 1992. Yet, his contributions to the community extended far beyond the workshop. Serving his country with honor in the United States Army, he embraced the values of service and duty that would guide him all his life.
Larry's spirit thrived in the open air. He was not just a farmer by passion; he was a steward of the land, tending to it as it tended to him. His love for hunting and an impressive assortment of firearms revealed a connection to nature that few could match. A jack of all trades, Larry poured his heart into woodworking, crafting pieces that told stories of his affectionate craftsmanship. Whether he was waxing poetic about Ford Tractors or sharing the rugged charm of Dodge Trucks, Larry’s passions shone brightly, drawing those around him into his world of enthusiastic craftsmanship and appreciation for the finer things in life.
His contributions transcended hobbies; they were indeed proud accomplishments. Larry served on the Board of Directors for the Michigan Snowmobile Association, logging countless hours grooming snowmobile trails for over three decades. He was a proud member of the Hubbard Lake Sportsmans Club where he donated all of the rocks and transported all of the fish shelters that were placed in Hubbard Lake, and where fellow enthusiasts found camaraderie in shared pursuits. As Vice President of Quality Deer Management and an active participant in the Alpena Long Beards Association, he fostered a love for the outdoors that nurtured friendships and enriched the lives of many.
Larry's life was enriched by his loving wife, Patricia Marzean, who stood by him through all of life’s ups and downs. He leaves behind several siblings and cherished family friends, including Arnie Edmonds, Lowell Kollien, Tim Haske, Susie Ohlrich, Nancy Montie, Bill Scheuner, and the Don Thomas Family—each a testament to the bonds he nurtured with unwavering devotion.
While Larry's presence has transitioned to a new journey, he is now reunited with those who preceded him in death: his beloved parents, John and Marie Marzean, and his revered grandparents, Romeo and Delia Baker. The pair of comforting souls who had guided him in life, along with his Aunt & Uncle Bette and Ivan Rouleau, now gather in a place beyond the earthly realm, where the laughter never fades and the love endures unbroken.
Larry J. Marzean embodied loyalty, resilience, and passion. His legacy will be celebrated in the hearts of those who knew him, cherished in stories shared around fires and remembered through the tools he crafted and the lessons he imparted. As he departs from My Michigan Medical Center to embrace a more serene existence, the world mourns a remarkable man whose impact will echo through generations.
