John A. Benson Sr., age 73, of Alpena, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Saturday, October 31, 2020, at home.
On August 29, 1947, he was born in Alpena, Michigan to William L. and Eulah (Bean) Benson Sr. He served in the U.S. Marines during the Vietnam War. Later after returning home John became the owner and operator of several businesses in Alpena, Michigan: he started with the Friendly Bar from 1978 until 1984, J.J.'s Steak House starting in 1993; Bogart's Bar starting in 1997; Jeppeto's Restaurant in 2000; the Thunder Bird in 2004; the Hide-A-Way Bar in 2005; and most currently John A. Lau Restaurant.
John is survived by his son Jon (Susan) Benson; three beloved grand-labs: Countea, Blazer, and Bea; his mother Eulah "Gussie" Benson two brothers: William "Bill" (Sheri Hornak) Benson Jr., Robert "Bob" (Katie) Benson, Jon's mother: Linda Benson; four nieces: Robin Benson, Wendy Samp, Anna Benson, and Serenity Milligan; along with several great nieces and nephews..
He was preceded in death by his father Bill, his grandparents, and two uncles Benny (Alice) Benson and Tom "Fuzzy" Benson.
Arrangements are being handled through the Karpus-Hunter Funeral Home. A Funeral Service will held on Tuesday, November 3, 2020, at St. Paul Lutheran Church beginning at 12 p.m. with Rev. John Shipman officiating followed by Full Military Honors accorded by the V.F.W. Post 2496.
Interment: Evergreen Cemetery
