Eugene 'Geno' Kenneth Hayes Sr.

March 8, 1940 — October 8, 2018

Eugene Kenneth Hayes Sr. "Geno", age 78, of Alpena, made his final departure from this world on Monday, October 8, 2018, at his home in the loving care of his family.

On March 8, 1940, Eugene was born to the late John and Florence (Skiba) Hayes. He married Dixie Thomas on July 23, 1960 at St. Anne Catholic Church. Eugene spent 46 and a half years as a Merchant Marine on the Great Lakes. At the time of his retirement in 2004, Geno had logged more sea time than anyone during that period of time. Eugene loved playing cards with his friends. He also loved his dogs, his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and of course his beloved wife Dixie of 58 years.

He is survived by his beloved wife Dixie, and their four children: Eugene Hayes Jr., Barb Church, Greg and Paul Hayes, five grandchildren: Eugene (Melissa) Hayes III, Andrew (Lynelle) Hayes, Brandon and Christina Hayes, and Zoe Church; four great-grandchildren: Easton, Brielle, Kasey, and Alexis. He is also survived by his brother Jerry (Lee) Hayes, one sister Carol (Chris), his in-laws Judith (Fred) Hart and his Special Friends: George (Brenda) Snedden, Clarence Rudy and Dan (Denise) Mitchell.

Eugene was preceded in death by his youngest brother Richard Hayes and one son-in-law Thomas Church.

Per his wishes Eugene has been taken from the Karpus-Hunter Funeral Home for cremation and a Private Family Service will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers friends may send donations to the incredibly compassionate Hospice of Michigan.
