Carol Elise 'Annie' Martin

December 21, 1926 — May 31, 2021

Carol Elise (Brink) Martin, 94, of Ossineke, MI, passed away peacefully at her home on
Monday, May 31, 2021, surrounded by family. "Annie," as she was known to friends and family,
was born on December 21, 1926, to George Alfred and Mary Emma (Dickson) Brink in St. Paul,
MN. She was their youngest daughter, joining her sister and lifelong friend Nancy Jane "Susie"
(Brink) Cheffey. After graduating from Central High School in St. Paul in 1944, she went to
Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA and became a commercial artist designing greeting
cards for The Norcross Greeting Card Company in New York City. They are best remembered
for being the first commercial card company to produce Valentine's Day cards.
She married Dale L. Stein on June 12, 1948, in St. Paul, MN. That union produced a son,
David E. Stein. She married Leo B. Poulin on November 10, 1959, in Milford, CT with three
children resulting: Scott K., Tracy, and Neal I. Edgar. After their divorce, she spent many years
pulling double duty as a single mother and as sole caregiver for her ailing mother. After her
mother's death in 1986, she married Dr. Laurence A. Martin on May 23, 1989, in Croswell, MI.
Following his retirement from the ministry they moved to Ossineke where they built their log
cabin home on the shores of Lake Huron. He preceded her in death in May 2014.
A devoted Christian, Annie became very active in the First Presbyterian Church of Alpena
and served as the church's Commissioner to the Presbytery. She also served on the Board of
Directors at Thunder Bay Theater and was active with the Association of Lifelong Learners. She
actively supported the Arts, never missing a play or symphony orchestra concert. Other interests
included a love for jigsaw puzzles and word games, especially crossword puzzles and
cryptograms.

Annie had a servant's heart and looked for ways to brighten somebody else's day. She was
well known in the community for greeting friends and strangers alike with both a smile and a
dark chocolate Hershey's kiss.

Annie was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and her beloved sister Susie. She is
survived by her four children: David (Diane) Stein of Greenwood Lake, NY; Scott (Debby)
Edgar of Herron, MI; Tracy Malone of Ossineke, MI, and Neal (Camilla) Edgar of Boonville,
MO. She had five grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. They include Scott's children,
Danielle (Cody) McIntosh and their son, Bo; Jeremy Edgar; and Debby's son, Charles Alan; and
Neal's children, Adam (Grace) Edgar and their children, Sutton, Freya, and Huckson; Elizabeth
(Zachary) Hulbert and their children, Zyler, Landyn, and Grayson; and Gabriella (Dakota)
Quinlan and their children, Lily and Sophia. She is also survived by a host of extended family,
friends, and her beloved twenty-two year old, cat, Syntche.

In accordance with her wishes, her body was donated to the Wayne State University School
of Medicine. A celebration of life service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers,
memorial contributions may be made in her name to the First Presbyterian Church of Alpena
Memorial Fund.
